Top 10 Best Gifts for Boys
Although my favorite among all is Books but you must check all of them to make your buying decision.
Most of the people prefer to buy books when we are planning to buy gifts for boys. Especially if the boy lives next door and we want to give a birthday gift as we are invited.
However, we always should try to check with the parents, what kind of books he reads.
Boys mostly like to read about funny stories like George and Martha Round and Round, Frank Einstein or about outer space and aliens like Autumnblings, My Robots: The Robotic Genius of Lady Regina Bonquers III, or about the lives of movie stars, sports personalities, science fiction etc.
Another thing you need to keep in mind is the language in which the child is comfortable. If he or she reads books in English, then we can safely buy them books in English.
We can also tell them to start reading books in English to improve their vocabulary, grammar and sentence construction.
If they love to read books in other Indian languages, you may choose that too.
You may choose to buy the hardcover bound books or if the child owns a kindle, then the kindle version. Just ensure that the boy does not own the book already.

This is one safe gift you can give to any boy and it will always come handy as the old one will wear out and he will need a new one.
Just be a little careful while buying the designs. Do not buy a backpack with the picture of a Barbie doll or Hanna Montana as they are typically designed for girls.

Buyer's Guide - How to Purchase Gifts for Boys
Types of Gifts - Occasion based
So if it is a birthday, then buying something which your friend or cousin loves the most is the ideal thing. If he loves perfumes or after shaves, or ties, or shirts then buy something which he will love a lot. You will be aware of his taste.
Another good idea would be to buy which he had been talking about. For e.g. if he is talking about buying a particular movie CD (even though now everyone watches movies online, but there are people who create a collection), or a book, or a particular brand of keyboard or headphones, then it is better to buy that.
Always check with his family and friends to get the exact match and you will see the boy grinning with joy when he opens the pack.
Passing an exam
Passing the class tenth or twelfth board exams always calls for celebrations and close families like to give some gifts during this time. Most people would send some money to the parents, or these days might end up buying amazon or flipkart gift coupons.
It is not a bad idea because the boy can buy something which he wants to buy.
It may be a sports kit which costs in thousands and his pocket money is not enough to buy it. Or a tablet or smartphone which the teenage kids now a days want to buy quite frequently. It might be a racing bicycle or a series of some books.
Festivals is another occasion when the close family members like to send some gifts or money to buy those gifts. It may be Diwali, Durga Puja, Eid or Christmas. Most of the relatives would buy clothes and visit the relatives during such occasions.
These days we can use the online delivery options and send them to the children of relatives who stay far off. We forget one important aspect while doing this. School going children in most of their waking hours spend time in their school uniforms, hence having a wardrobe full of clothes does not help much.
Also since they are in a growing age, their clothes will soon become small for their size. Always look for a gift which the boy will cherish for a long time. Maybe a set of books which he wanted to buy, or a computer game too can be an ideal gift during festivals.
Paying a portion of the tuition fees often is a big help specially since these days the expenses are very high.
Opening a savings a/c for the boy
This is one thing every family should do the moment a boy child is born. Open a savings account in his name keeping the parents as the custodians of the a/c. Deposit all the money which the relatives give in the first few years when they come home to see the child.
You will see that as your son grows, the savings too will grow with him. This money will be very useful in the higher education of your son and giving a strong background to him. Also take children’s policies when they are growing. Relatives can always sponsor premiums and that will be the best gifts ever.
Types of Gifts - Budget based
Budget plays a huge role while choosing a gift. You may choose to buy books, water bottles, tiffin boxes, geometry boxes, color pencil sets, water color sets depending on the choice of the boy.
If it is a teenaged boy, then you can go for perfumes and deodorants which he can wear during prom nights etc. You can buy T shirts with nice wordings or funky pictures. You may even gift a wallet which will give him a feeling that he is growing up.
Even mobile cases, headsets will be ideal gifts for boys as they listen to a lot of music and play games on their smart phones these days.
If you have a decent budget, then buying a good backpack, or even gifting a school uniform set, paining kit, sports kit will be useful. Normally these things come expensive and parents often delay buying them as they are not immediate requirements.
If you are planning to spend a good amount, then deposit it in his bank account which will be useful for him later. If the boy is ambitious and dreams of going for higher education, this money will really come handy.
Do not waste thousands of rupees buying sneakers, or clothes as they will wear out soon. You can gift sports bike if the child has an interest in cycling.
Types of Gifts - Other
Sponsor a vacation
If you are a close family member, or family friend, then you can sponsor for the school trip for which they parents are unwilling to spend. It may be out of their budget or they find it irrelevant. The boy will always thank you in his lifetime for gifting his first trip with his classmates and friends.
Sponsor a summer camp
There are many theme based summer camps these days. Some will have the theme of sports, some dance, music, musical instruments, some will be meant for quiz wizards, some for chess wizards, some for hiking and biking lessons.
Based on the interest of the boy, sponsor one such summer camp. It will go a long way as it will help in his overall personality development. If the parents were reluctant to spend for such camps, it is possible that they get to see the benefits of it and include it in their budget.
Sponsor a cricket coaching camp
If there are cricket coaching camps, or chess coaching camps in your city, or there are famous ones coming down to conduct sessions during the summer vacations, allow the boy to participate in them.
Who knows, you might be honing the skills of a future Tendulkar or Dhoni. Enjoy the journey of grooming a prodigy.
My thoughts and recommendation
We all have been little boys and girls at some point in our lives and we always have experienced the joy of receiving a gift.
On one hand getting chocolates or sweets while visiting a home which has children has been a norm for generations, it will be thoughtful if we spend the same money in buying something which will add some value to the child.
We often forget a few things while buying gifts for boys. We put our choice into consideration while choosing a gift. For e.g. while choosing a backpack, we are not buying it for a corporate executive, but a school going kid. He will like to have some cartoon characters instead of the logo of the manufacturer.
While buying books, we should not think that self-help books will help him. He might read them after a few years when he reaches college or the corporate world. While buying T shirts, do not buy the boring ones which you might buy for yourself.
Always keep the child in mind while choosing. Color again plays a huge role in that. Young boys would like to wear bright colors, not somber blues, greys or beiges. So choose something accordingly. It would be best if you can take the picture of the stuff and send it to them before paying for it.
Another important thing is judicious usage of money. If your budget is high, then use it for something which will add value to his life. Not buying just clothes of accessories. The parents will anyway spend money on the basic needs of the child.
Another aspect which many adults forget is the age of the child. When I was growing up, my parents celebrated my birthday with a lot of pomp and show every year. I often have got gifts which are either meant for kids younger than my age, or older than my age.
My mother did not have any other option but to give it to my younger brother or any other younger child in the neighborhood or keep it for future use.
After two years when my mom used to take out the T shirt which was gifted to me on my tenth birthday, I would have already forgotten about the person who had gifted it. So the joy of receiving a gift was gone.
So no matter what you do, do not take away the excitement of giving and receiving the gift. Gift is a physical manifestation of our love and care for the receiver. The care we show in choosing it shows our intensity of closeness towards that person.
In this case since it is a young guy, make him feel happy and see his innocent smile. That will be a moment to cherish for a lifetime.
