Buyer's Guide - Polaroid Buying Guide in India

What are Polaroid Cameras

Instant camera is a unique gadget which takes advantage of a self-developing film to develop prints after capturing images. The instant cameras were designed and developed under the supervision of Polaroid Corporation.

They manufactured user-friendly instant camera.

An eminent American scientist named Edwin Land was the pioneer behind the development of instant camera. The initial model 95 Land Camera was introduced back in the year 1948. However, the first instant camera introduced by Samuel Shlafrock contained a camera and portable wet dark room.

In the year February 2008, Polaroid Corporation filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and they had officially announced to stop the production of instant camera and wind up the firm. In the forthcoming year, PLR IP Holdings LLC acquired Polaroid to market and distributes products associated with Polaroid camera.

Types of Polaroid Cameras

  • First Generation Polaroid CameraPolaroid cameras are broadly classified on the basis of the film used. The first ever Polaroid (pre-1963) depended upon instant roll-film. It comprises of two rolls namely positive and developing agent as well as negative. The rolls are later directly loaded into the camera. It arrives in three sizes 40, 30 and 20.
  • Second Generation Polaroid Camera
The second generation of Polaroid camera took advantage of one hundred series pack in which the concerned photographer draw the film out from the instant camera. Later, the positive is removed from the negative during final stages of film processing.
  • Third Generation Polaroid Camera
One of the most popular third generation Polaroid cameras was the SX-70 that primarily used a square format integral film. It comprises of all the major components including developer, fixer and negative as well. After taking each shot, the exposure is left to develop automatically. The SX-70 was a unique Polaroid camera where image manipulation can be executed seamlessly. Sun 600 and One 600 film was considered to be more quick and faster than the previous models. The Polaroid Spectra Camera exploited Polaroid Spectra Film.

Polavision Features

Polavision was yet another instant movie camera introduced by the Polaroid Corporation. The package comprises of film, camera and last but not the least movie viewer. Once a shot is taken, the photographer pulls back the film from the camera and later it is inserted to the movie viewer for further processing.

This process is quite familiar to that of Super 8mm Film. One of the major differences between a Polavision film and a normal film is that the former one contains an additive film.

The process involves a combination of primary colors like red, blue and green to arrive at the right color image. However, there were few setbacks with respect to the Polavision film. It had a very low film speed; as a result adequate light is required while capturing images. Furthermore, a special player is essential to view and develop the movie.

Types of Non-Polaroid Instant Cameras

Quite a few Polaroid cameras were manufactured soon after the launch of instant camera by American Scientist Edwin Land. Konica, Minolta and Keystone are just to name a few, while some were found to incompatible with Polaroid camera and film. Fujifilm launched instant camera and film in specific market niche.

  • Kodak's EK and Kodamatic: It shares similar features to that of a Polaroid. However, integral instant film developed by Kodak was found to be incompatible with Polaroid SX-70.
  • Fujifilm: The Fujifilm introduced a series of instant camera both in Asian and Japanese markets respectively. They termed instant camera line by the name 'Fotorama'. The F-series of camera comprises of F-10, F-62 AF, F-50.
  • ACE camera: The ACE cameras were launched during the mid-1990. Its film was quite similar to that of an 800 film; however there was slight difference in the cartridge.

The integral films are processed on the basis of Kodak series of instant camera films. Fujifilm were considered to be the initial manufacturers who included varying shooting modes in Polaroid camera. Take for example, 'Kid Mode', upon activation of Kid Mode, you can instantly capture fast moving objects or even people.

During later 1990's, the Fujifilm launched a line of camera that incorporated a film known by the name 'Instax'. However, it was only available in the markets located outside United States of America.

Upon the introduction of Instax Mini/Cheki line, smaller sized Instax were available in abundance. Polaroid's Mio which took advantage of Fujifilm Instax Mini was later renamed to Mio Film.

Back in the year 2014, Lomography invested a lump sum amount in the creation of an instant camera. They funded approximately one-lakh dollars via Kickstarter.

Two years later, Lomography had officially announced the creation of a brand new instant camera termed as the 'Lomo Instant Automat'.

Mint Camera

Back in the year 2015, MiNT Camera had officially launched the InstantFlex TL70. It is a vintage twin lens reflex polaroid camera which takes advantage of Fuji Instax Mini Film rather than SX-70 film.

Uses of Instant Camera

The Instant Camera is used in wide varieties of applications such as ID Cards, ultrasound photos and passport size photos. It is one of the preferred gadgets even amongst the police officers and fire investigators owing to their ability to develop unalterable instant images.

Both medium and large format photographers take advantage of high-end Polaroid camera to preview the lighting pattern before capturing images. The instant film was also used in multiple ways which is quite similar to folk art, image manipulation etc.

Even the script supervisors exploit Polaroid cameras in the movie industry. The passport photo cameras have gone the digital way.

The initial role movie cameras required the assistance of a photographer to take advantage of a light meter to record the readings. The photographer flips a switch and later the negative is pulled back from the positive.

As soon as the picture is developed within the camera, the photographer opens up a small door at back of the camera. In order to prevent fading, a fixing agent is coated over the black and white positive.

The instant film camera including SX-70, 600 series, Spectra and Captiva camera helps in creating instant photos. Edwin Land was the pioneer behind the creation of first Polaroid camera on February 21st, 1947.

However, one of the most popular cameras that were used by the photographers was the Polaroid Pic 300 instant print camera. It is just a matter of few click where users can capture, edit and print the images instantly.

Polaroid Z2300---Fashion Photography

The Polaroid Z2300 is one of the popular instant digital cameras used in the field of fashion photography. It enables the users to snap, print and share pics owing to the default memory of the camera.

This unique camera have the ability to crop, include borders and can be used to apply filters.

Best Polaroid Camera for Outdoor Use

The Polaroid ISO85 is the recommended digital camera for outdoor purposes owing to its strong features. It is a 16MP camera which contains a waterproof that extends to approximately three meters.

It provides a front and rear screen which can be used to take selfies at any point of time.

Maintenance of Camera Rollers

Dirty rollers are one of the major factors behind the cause of film defects. The experts suggest inspecting the rollers in between the film packs. Each pack should be cleaned at least two to three times.

The rollers can be easily accessed through opening the film door compartment. The cleansing process is extremely easy with the help of a soft and dampened cloth. The rollers are allowed to dry before the usage of camera.

Polaroid SX-70

Polaroid SX-70 is one of the most complex instant cameras. Only an experienced photographer will be able to deal with this type of Polaroid camera. In order to arrive at a positive and consistent results, one should get familiar with the principles and techniques of installing and using it.

The adjustable variables of a Polaroid SX-70 are broadly classified into focus wheel and exposure compensation wheel. The latter one should be adjusted for each exposure.

The sensitivity of a Polaroid SX-70 is about +-160 ASA. The experts suggest adjusting the exposure wheel. Each time when you close or fold down the camera, the exposure compensation wheel is automatically reset to central/neutral position. As a result, it is highly recommended to adjust the wheel before each shot is taken.

The varying shooting conditions require fewer adjustments in order to obtain the highest exposure. An image might appear dark when a black color appears on the exposure wheel. Likewise, a picture appears to be light when white color appears on the exposure wheel.

Activating flash with Polaroid SX-70

While shooting indoors, SX-70 require sufficient amount of light to obtain superior quality and highly exposed images. In the case of a Polaroid SX-70 a very high shutter speed is required to capture images in darker environments.

One can easily hear the delay that occurs while pressing the shutter button and ejecting the photo from the camera at the exact same time.

The experts recommend replacing Polaroid SX-70 with Mint SX-70 Flash Bar especially in darker environments. It is suggested to set the exposure wheel in either center/normal whenever you are using flash.

The vintage Polaroid Cameras have gained popularity amongst the public. Even though the digital photography had surpassed the instant cameras, the Polaroid cameras seems to find a space in this current market.
